Colts find hope in ‘outstanding’ rookie Marlon Mack

Indianapolis’ wideout depth has been an issue all season. After left with a hamstring injury in the first quarter, dropped 2-3 passes. He wound up with 19 yards on eight targets.

6. Now 6-7 and third place in the , the Colts head on the road the next two weeks in Minnesota and Oakland. With Tennessee and Houston both at 7-6, Indianapolis may have to win out to get in the tournament. They aren’t complete enough to do that.

Less than 24 hours before the official start of training camp, the Colts announced rookie safety Malik Hooker (hamstring) has been moved to the active roster from the physically unable to perform list. The team also announced they moved defensive end Kendall Langford and center/guard Brian Schwenke to the PUP list.

Hooker reportedly suffered the injury during a conditioning test on Monday. He missed the Colts’ offseason program after undergoing shoulder and sports hernia surgeries in January prior to being selected No. 15 overall by Indy in the draft.

Luck’s status will be one of the NFL’s major storylines of August. As optimistic as the team’s brass has been, Ballard is reluctant to promise that the starting QB will practice before Week 1.

As former Colts interim coach and current Cardinals head man Bruce Arians referenced last week, Indianapolis has been overly reliant upon Luck to carry the team since the No. 1 overall pick entered the league in 2012.

Pro Football Focus noted that the hard-running Mack generated five missed tackles on just seven touches for an outrageous elusive rating of 542.9.

Mack’s arrival is timely for the Colts, who certainly can’t ask 34-year-old Frank Gore to operate as the team’s solo workhorse. Robert Turbin is also on the roster, but look for the rookie to play an emerging role for a team desperately in search of an anchoring force during a trouble-filled lead up to Week 1.

Indianapolis signed Griffey after he went undrafted in April out of the University of Arizona. Just over two months later, Griffey finds himself a free agent once more.

Griffey played a full season just twice in his four years catching passes at the University of Arizona. The best of those years came as a sophomore in 2014, when Griffey caught 31 passes for 405 yards and one touchdown.

NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported Tuesday that none of this comes as a surprise to the Colts organization, which expected the quarterback to spend minicamp on the sideline. The great unknown remains whether he’ll be ready for training camp.

The positive here is that Luck is not learning a new offense, nor are the majority of the team’s core offensive players. However, without any idea of how significant the recovery and adjustment period will be, it’s difficult to place this Colts offseason in its proper context.
